My story

I qualified as a doctor in 2008 with ambitious plans to become a high flying intensivist and anaesthetist. I got onto one of the most competitive training programmes in the country before realising that it wasn’t making me fulfilled, so I then switched training programmes to become a GP. However, once having qualified as a GP I very quickly developed anxiety and burned out in my first year of being qualified.

I felt absolutely awful. I felt like I had let down my patients and my colleagues. My head was an exhausting, desperate place to exist.

I had inadvertently slipped into severe anxiety, depression and burnout within 6 months of becoming a GP.

What happened next was a period of extremely difficult recovery, self reflection and growth. Aided by NHS Practitioner Health, I learned techniques and strategies to help manage my anxiety, depression and burnout. I was then able to get myself into a position where I could develop my career in order to work in a way that allowed me to protect my mental health, and thrive in my work.

I have a degree in Neuroscience which, alongside my clinical experience as a GP, and my personal experience with burnout, means I am uniquely placed as a mental health expert and advocate

My mission now is to share what I have learned on my journey with others. I want to help break down the stigma that is associated with mental health problems in healthcare and other sectors. I want individuals, businesses and organisations to have the skills and the knowledge to recognise, prevent and manage burnout and other mental health problems in the workplace.

The advice I give is always based on the best contemporary scientific evidence available .

I’ve now delivered teaching on burnout and stress management to over 1000 people both online and in person. Please see my testimonials page for examples of some of the feedback I have had from my teaching.
